Association Webinars: How much more electricity is needed for decarbonization? Drivers and impacts in New York

Decarbonization often rhymes with electrification. The IEA’s Net Zero by 2050 report sees global electricity use more than doubling between now and 2050. Even without net zero targets, such as in the US EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook 2021, electricity sales grow by 27% in the next 30 years. It is therefore important to understand the drivers of such growth, and the implications for the power sector. Using the case of New York as a case study, this webinar will look at different possible pathways for the New York aggregated load profile and examine their supply implications. The impact of key policy choices are highlighted: energy efficiency and regional collaboration have a strong influence on the required generation capacity and overall costs. Neglecting demand reduction actions and improvements in the regional power market are indeed shown to increase very significantly the cost of decarbonization.
