Association Webinars: Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Energy: From Pipedream to Practical Applications



  

 

OECD compares AI to the invention of steam engine, electric power, and the internet, with potentially huge implications for the energy industry and our society as a whole. The topics covered will include the history of AI, creation of digital twins in Singapore, use of AI for grid decarbonization in the US, as well as applications of AI in Estonia's energy system.

Moderator:

Anna (Ebers) Broughel is a renewable energy economist at an engineering consulting firm Tetra Tech. Her most recent research reviewed over 60 international energy scenarios for 2040 and beyond, developing four main scenarios for post-COVID19 energy futures. Prior to joining Tetra Tech, she worked at the U.S. Department of Energy as a Science and Technology Fellow. During her post-doctoral training at the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland and at the University of Maryland, College Park, she researched social acceptance of wind energy and other energy technologies. She holds a PhD in economics and policy from the State University of New York in association with Syracuse University, where she was a Fulbright scholar. Currently, she serves as a council member for the U.S. Association for Energy Economics and is a non-resident fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. In the past, Dr. Broughel has taught classes in energy policy and climate change as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Speakers:

Dale Kruchten is a Director in Guidehouse's Advanced Solutions Energy Analytics group where he heads up the Innovations Development effort. Dale has extensive experience in both advanced analytics and in the energy sector. He possesses expert knowledge (technical, capabilities, limitations, etc.) of cutting-edge advanced analytics, AI/ML, modeling & simulation, cognitive technology and process automation having personally designed enhancements to a number of these technologies. Additionally, his knowledge and expertise in the business functions of energy utilities (for both power and natural gas) extends across the entire utility (e.g. engineering, operations, customer, finance, risk, etc.). This has been demonstrated by Dale having spent the past 20 years focused on solving major problems by employing advanced analytics & AI/ML for two major US energy utilities and one major international energy investment company focused on large generation assets in the UK. In doing so, Dale established a significant track record of delivering efficient, effective, cost-saving and revenue generating solutions across numerous major business functions. In the past 10 years alone, Dale designed, built and successfully put into production over 250 major advanced disruptive analytics solutions across a major US utility.

Suzanne Russo is chief executive officer for Pecan Street. Prior to joining the organization in 2010, she was director of sustainability initiatives for New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development where she led the development of green building and sustainable retrofit standards for municipally-funded affordable housing. Over the past seven years, Suzanne served as chief of staff and then chief operating officer for Pecan Street, during which time Forbes named her one of five women 'Using Technology to Blow Up Social Change.' An urban planner with a masters degree in community and regional planning from the University of Texas at Austin, Suzanne has worked in Africa, China, India and the USA on community-based sustainable development.

Kristjan Eljand is a technology scout at Eesti Energia, Estonia's publicly held energy company and the largest oil shale to energy company in the world. His role is to search for new digital solutions to implement in the company, including the AI. Kristjan used to head STACC (Software Technology and Applications Competence Center) that is the leading data science and AI competence center in the county. He has a keen interest in investment planning, financial management, and he has been an avid investor since being a student.
