Association Webinars: Politics & Markets: Shaping Post-Election Energy Policy



  

With the U.S. general election less than 50 days away, the direction of U.S. energy policy and its impact on global energy markets is at stake. In addition, the ongoing effects of COVID-19 and heightened climate and economic justice activism have the potential to influence U.S. energy policy in 2021 and beyond. This is the first of a series of webinars that will feature leading energy markets experts and economists while exploring the role of economics, activists, investors and geopolitics on post-election energy policy.

Moderator:

Paula Gant, SVP, Strategy & Innovation, Gas Technology Institute

Dr. Gant is responsible for strategy and planning as well as leading efforts to commercialize technology and scientific discoveries needed for gases, liquid fuels and infrastructure to contribute to low-carbon, low-cost energy systems - in the U.S. and around the globe. At GTI, innovation is an enterprise-wide effort invested in disruptive advances in technologies and processes.

In previous private and public sector leadership roles, Paula has focused on the intersection of technology, markets, and policy - and the solutions needed to transition energy systems. In leadership roles at the U.S. Department of Energy, Paula administered natural gas export regulation and R&D programs executed by the National Energy Technology Lab, along with implementation of international clean energy deployment initiatives and multilateral energy security engagements. She holds a B.A. in Economics from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and a Ph.D. in Economics from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.

Kevin Book, Director of Research, Clearview Energy Partners LLC

Kevin Book heads the research team at ClearView Energy Partners, LLC, an independent research firm headquartered in Washington D.C. Mr. Book's analytical coverage includes policy, economic and geopolitical trends impacting fossil fuels and technologies. He appears frequently within print and broadcast media, contributes to policy forums convened by government and private organizations and meets with top Washington decision-makers. Mr. Book has also testified before several House and Senate Committees.

Mr. Book is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the National Petroleum Council, a self-funded advisory body to the Secretary of Energy. He is also nonresident Senior Associate with the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Prior to co-founding ClearView, Mr. Book worked as a senior energy analyst for a national investment bank. He holds an M.A. in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a B.A. in economics from Tufts University.

Varun Sivaram, Senior Research Scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University SIPA

Dr. Sivaram is a physicist, bestselling author, and clean energy technology expert with experience spanning the corporate, public, and academic sectors. Most recently, as chief technology officer of ReNew Power, Sivaram led research and development for a multibillion-dollar company recognized as India’s largest producer of renewable energy. He previously consulted as a member of McKinsey & Co’s energy practice, served as director for the energy and climate program at the Council on Foreign Relations and as a senior energy advisor to the Los Angeles mayor and New York governor’s office. A widely published scientist and innovation scholar, he serves on the boards of Stanford University’s energy and environment institutes, and created the course “Clean Energy Innovation” as a Georgetown University professor to train the next generation of energy leaders.

Most recently he co-authored Energizing America: A Roadmap to Launch a National Energy Innovation Mission. He also authored the bestselling book, Taming the Sun: Innovations to Harness Solar Energy and Power the Planet and edited Digital Decarbonization: Promoting Digital Innovations to Advance Clean Energy Systems. Bill Gates has praised his work as “one of the best arguments I’ve read for why the US should invest in a clean energy revolution.” TIME Magazine named him to its inaugural TIME 100 Next list of the next 100 most influential people in the world, Forbes Magazine called him one of the 30 under 30 in Law and Policy, Grist selected him as one of the top 50 leaders in sustainability, and PV Magazine named him the “Hamilton of the Solar Industry.” A Rhodes and Truman Scholar, he holds a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from Oxford University and undergraduate degrees in engineering physics and international relations from Stanford University.
